All names in these stories are pseudonyms.

Liliana describes herself as Funny laided back forward blunt silly. She lives in a large Northeastern city with her daughter, a cat and a dog. She is a college graduate and works in customer service. Asked how her background shaped her, she answers in a line: Its a part of who I am.how I grew up. Her answers across the five days are short, often a few words, sometimes in capital letters. One reading is that her brevity is itself a voice: she says what she means and stops.

Her three defining moments fit in one sentence: I was born my child was born i turned 30. Only the last gets an explanation: My body didn't shed the weight as quickly as when I was in my teens or 20s. Asked to say more about what shaped her food, she declined: These statements are self explanatory and don't need detailed explanations. The challenge she names on Day 4 is written in capitals: MOVING OUT OF THE PROJECTS, I OVERCAME BY WORKING TO MOVE FOR 10 YRS APPLYING TO OTHER APTS. Ten years of applications sit inside that sentence; it is the longest stretch of effort anywhere in her diary.

She is blunt about her body and does not ask for softer words: I have been called fat because I am fat.i am overweight. I don't like the negative connotation of it but it is what it is. Her food personality, in her words: I eat like a fat girl. She gives her reason in the same breath: as a single mom I decided im no longer cooking and on top of that I don't excercise. A typical day is coffee, a chicken cutlet sandwich, and shrimp stir-fried with vegetables. Heartburn and asthma make eating harder. She does the shopping herself or orders online, and she alone prepares the food. Short videos on social media teach her new snacks.

MOVING OUT OF THE PROJECTS, I OVERCAME BY WORKING TO MOVE FOR 10 YRS APPLYING TO OTHER APTS

Liliana, Day 4

Her food is Rice beans and meat latin food. Asked to say more, she listed a signature dish for each of twenty-one Latin American countries, then asked, Was that good ???? The food ads she remembers are from a Latin food brand, watched as a child between my moms soaps. On a vegan meal she is not persuaded, and says so: Crappy vegan food. Her view of animals is plain and in her own capitals: CERTAIN Animals where out here so we can eat them. Asked what compassion for animals means, she wrote: You dont want to see them die.

Her superpower is one word, APATHY, followed by laughing faces. Asked for her weakness, she gave the same word: Apathy. Under stress, I laugh, or anxiety it could either or. She meditates, and she does not eat when stressed. What she is grateful for repeats like a drumbeat: My child My child My child My child my family. Her 2 a.m. person is her best friend: My BFF , yes she never sleeps. Her better world would start with the freedom to be yourself as long as it doesn't harm.others.

On Day 5 the thing she would change is The food is eat. She would gain weight loss, a better mood, and to be healthier all together, and she fears high blood pressure or diabetes if nothing changes. What she must stop: Stop thinking I can't do it. Her obstacles: Myself , time , covid 19. What would help: Motivation and support. Her letter, in capitals, is addressed to herself and signed with love.

Her lifeline

The moments that made her.

On the second day of the diary, each woman listed the defining moments of her life. Her lifeline draws them in order from left to right: the line rises for the moments she remembers as high points and falls for the hardest ones.

Her reset. might begin with the two things she asked for, “Motivation and support,” perhaps in the company of the friend who never sleeps.
